How to Buy Job Lots and Clearance Stock Without Getting Burned
Job lots, end-of-line and clearance stock can be profitable for eBay sellers and resellers. Here's how to judge a lot, check the seller and work out what it's really worth.
Job lots and clearance stock are some of the most profitable stock you can buy — and some of the easiest to lose money on. The difference comes down to what you check before you pay.
What counts as a job lot?
"Job lot" covers a wide range of stock, usually sold in bulk and below normal wholesale prices:
- End-of-line stock — discontinued ranges, old packaging or last season's colours
- Overstock — surplus from a brand, wholesaler or retailer
- Mixed lots — assorted products sold together
- Customer returns — items sent back to retailers, sold by grade (the riskiest kind)
The common thread is that each lot is a one-off. You can't reorder it, so every lot has to make its money on its own.
Who job lots suit
- eBay sellers, because eBay buyers actively search for discontinued and hard-to-find items
- Market traders and discount shops that need a changing range at low prices
- Resellers who sell on to other traders
They suit Amazon FBA sellers less well: mixed lots are hard to match to existing listings, and Amazon's condition and authenticity rules make returns stock risky.
Before you buy: six checks
1. Get a manifest
A manifest lists what's in the lot — product names, quantities, and ideally barcodes and condition. Never buy a large lot without one. For mixed or returns lots, the manifest is how you value it.
2. Understand the condition grades
"Grade A", "customer returns", "shelf-pulls" and "untested" all mean different things — and different sellers define them differently. Ask for the seller's written definition of each grade.
3. Check the seller
- Are they a registered business with a verifiable address?
- How long have they been trading?
- Can you visit, or at least see photos of the actual lot rather than a stock image?
- What happens if the lot doesn't match the manifest?
4. Value the lot item by item
Take the manifest and look up what each item actually sells for — on eBay, filter to sold listings. Add up a realistic total, then discount it for items that won't sell, won't sell quickly, or arrive damaged.
5. Count every cost
- The lot price, plus VAT if it applies
- Delivery — pallets are expensive to move
- Storage while you sell through
- Your time to sort, test, photograph and list
- Selling fees and postage
- Items you can't sell at all
6. Watch for counterfeits and restricted items
Lots that are unusually cheap for well-known brands deserve extra suspicion. Selling counterfeit goods can get your marketplace account restricted — and it's illegal. Also check for items you're not allowed to sell, such as age-restricted products.
Start small
Your first lots should be small enough that a bad one teaches you something rather than sinking your business. Keep records of what each lot cost and what it earned, and you'll quickly learn which suppliers and categories work for you.
Frequently asked questions
Are customer returns pallets worth it? They can be for experienced sellers who can test and repair items. Beginners usually do better with end-of-line and overstock lots, where the goods are new.
How do I find job lot suppliers? Clearance and liquidation companies, wholesalers clearing old lines, brand overstock sales and other resellers. Searching "[product] job lot" or "[product] clearance stock" is a good start.
Can I sell job lot items on Amazon? New, branded items that match an existing listing exactly may be listable, but check brand restrictions and invoice requirements first. Mixed and returns lots are generally better suited to eBay.
